Speechless Ep. 3 Bonfire

Strike three!  I am not going to get started it on the title. I have exempted the dashes because they have overused that joke. Good news: we've gotten pass Maya's compulsion to smother JJ. He meets some cool friends and hears about a bonfire everyone is going to but JJ can't go due to the inaccessible condition of the  outside venue.

Predictably,  Maya embarrasses her son by requesting the social gathering be canceled, straining JJ's bonds between him and his classmates. Soon, the students speak out against JJ. But when Maya realizes she was wrong, the two stage a fake prank to encourage his classmates to have a change of heart. Meanwhile, Jimmy helps Ray settle into the new home.
Once again, JJ comes across as a burden because he's in a wheelchair. It's human nature to feel self-conscious, especially if you are the new kid. Here, the show had a choice. once again, we see Maya meddling. When I was in grade school, I would talk to my OI teacher (which is nowhere to be found in this show) to talk about making this work. Sure, mom was by my side, but it ultimately came down to me.

When I wrote The Crave, I made sure that Mike Craven was his own person despite his disability. Conversely, the writers for Speechless have made JJ look like A kid reliant on others to go to bat for him. Meanwhile, Jimmy helps Ray settle into the new home. And the sap of the show profusely rolls as they have a father-son moment. the show hammers and hammers and hammers the we're-so-busy shtick it has critics saying, "The one bit of Speechless that's already wearing a bit thin is its extensive 'we're so busy with J.J. that we don't have time for the little things, and here's tons of visual evidence to that effect!'". We already understand that the DiMeo family's life is complicated! Last week's episode established that in a nice, relatively subtle way, and even if it hadn't, viewers are smart enough to infer the challenges they face. But, c'mon! It's a comedy. Viewers expect to laugh. I knew it was to good to be real. Then again, what else would you expect from the creator of Friends?
