Knives Out

Upon a famous writer's death, the sophisticated Detective Benoit Blanc ( Daniel Craig) comes to the deceased man's estate to investigate, interviewing dysfunctional relatives of the departed. With a wecb of red harings to sift through, Blanc begins to uncover the entangled truth.
"(It's) an entertainment that's as smart, witty, stylish and exhilarating as any movie lover could wish for, " says Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal Top Critic.
Following the whodunit tradition  set forth by Agatha Cristy, Rian Johnson puts a modern spin on the theme, making a smart, witty, Clue-like mystery. In a Fargo-like montage, there's a great deal of shannagans and antidotes with stabs of funny cynicism.
"Rian Johnson kept the mood of the movie rather light and seemingly frivolous, " writes
FlixChatter Film Blog's Ruth Maramis. "But don't let that fool you, it's suspenseful when it needs to be and so delightfully entertaining. "
By not taking itself too seriously , the onus of moving the plot relies heavily on the cast - a task equal to walking a tightrope; one slip and it's over.
With guidance from a smartly written script, the actors were able to bring the characters to life and make the film shine, and though the plot isn't exactly original, it's the chemistry among the actors that makes the movie sensational. What the film lacks in originality, it makes up in the privileged troublemakers of Thrombey family: Jamie Lee Curtis as Linda, Harlan'spractical daughter who is a real-estate tycoon; Michael Shannon as Walt, the irritable son who runs the family publishing business; and Don Johnson as Linda's womanizing husband Richard. Chris Evans and Toni Colette offer delightful non-hackneyed turns as Ransom, the trust-fund playboy, and Joni, who runs a Goop-like lifestyle brand. To top it off, film casters throw Lakeith Stanfield and Noah Segan in as the two detectives assisting  Benoit.
Things really get messy when they begin interviews, starting with Harlan Thornbey's nurse. With the peculiar affliction of vomiting when she lies, Marta Cabrera has no choice but to tell the truth and quickly becomes an asset for Benoit and his team.
Last, but not least, we mustn't forget the star of the show - the house itself. With creaky corners and dark halls, the old manor hides it'its own secrets within claustrophobic mazes, cabinets of curious books and bizarre heirlooms.
A well-oiled machine, Knives Out churns out twists that will keep you laughing and guessing until the very end.
